Foundational Data Science Training for Health Equity Researchers at Minority Serving Institutions: A SoRDS Event
Published in 2023 IEEE 11th International Conference on Healthcare Informatics (ICHI), 2023
This paper describes the successful adaptation of the CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science curriculum to address the critical skills gap in data science among health equity researchers at minority-serving institutions. The 10-week hybrid training program combined virtual instruction with in-person workshops, reaching 39 researchers across the southeastern United States. The curriculum covered essential data science foundations including programming, data analysis, research data management, and computational infrastructure, with specific emphasis on ethical data practices and health equity applications. This work represents an important step toward increasing diversity and representation in data science while building capacity for health equity research in underserved communities.
